To explore the concept of smart cities in India and to explore opportunities in this emerging area, ASAPP Media Information Group is organizing SM@RT CITIES SUMMIT 2014 on 22-23 August 2014 in Mumbai. With ICLEI South Asia as an Industry Association Partner, the Smart Cities Summit will be a platform for multiple public and private sectors to meet, network and discuss a cohesive approach to achieve sustainable economic outcome.
The growing scarcity of resources and increasing urbanization has made it essential to re-think urban planning. Urbanization poses a great challenge to the development of sustainable infrastructure. Experts globally now rely on intelligent structures and well networked supply systems and are working towards creating new and smart areas or smartening the urban systems with existing circumstances to optimize resource utilization. Realizing the importance of the situation, India plans to develop almost 70 Smart Cities by 2030. Government and private industry stakeholders in the country are striving hard to learn, understand and adapt to the international best practices in developing smart cities or smartening up the existing ones.
SM@RT CITIES SUMMIT 2014 aims at bringing together all government and private captains like City Mayors, Municipal Commissioners, Architects, Designers, Engineers, Technology Providers, Financial Institutions and Investors, Construction Companies, Policymakers and Regulators to deliberate on opportunities, challenges and solutions.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
