In a fast urbanizing world, cities need innovative solutions to increase efficiency and sustainability, effectively use available data in decision making and planning, and improve the livelihoods of their inhabitants. Adequate institutional frameworks, organizational and business models are needed to implement technological solutions effectively. Businesses, as solution providers, and local decision makers from around the world are key stakeholders that need to jointly create an enabling, yet well reflected environment of policies and market conditions to promote those solutions that truly make cities more sustainable and livable.
As the leading global association of local governments, ICLEI brings together businesses and cities for dialogues on smart and sustainable city solutions. City-Business Talks @Metropolitan Solutions, to be held on 20-22 May 2015 in Berlin, Germany, will enable participants to network and to develop partnerships and joint strategies as well as to foster mutual understanding of the supply and demand side of sustainable city solutions.
For Metropolitan Solutions 2015, ICLEI will transition from hosting its Global Town Hall event series at the trade show to focusing directly on City-Business Talks, with the new ICLEI Lounge Talks supplementing a rich conference program.
Metropolitan Solutions is the gateway event to cross-industry solutions for urban infrastructure. The trade show focuses on best-practice examples and currently available solutions for the urgent infrastructure problems faced by cities around the world. Core topics are energy, mobility and communication technologies as well as pathways to smart cities. Metropolitan Solutions also brings together a variety of specialized conferences under one roof, creating the most comprehensive global platform on smart cities and urban infrastructure.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, training courses tailored to the needs of local government experts.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
