ICLEI gears up for the Climate Summit 2014

World leaders are gathering in New York next week to attend the Climate Summit 2014. Convened by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the Summit aims to mobilize political will and galvanize climate action. Among its eight key action areas are cities – a clear indication of the crucial role we have in fighting climate change.
For over two decades, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability has been advocating for cities and local governments to be appropriately recognized, engaged and empowered to tackle climate change. The Local Government Climate Roadmap maps out this journey which begun in 2007 in Bali. The Summit marks an important step in this journey.
ICLEI will feed its rich experience, expertise and vision to the success of the Summit. It is one of the core partners of one of the biggest announcements at the Summit – the Compact of Mayors. Born out of an unprecedented international collaboration between cities networks and supporters, the Compact is the largest effort for cities to slash its greenhouse gas emissions, report their progress, and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
ICLEI will also support a number of groundbreaking cities initiatives on finance, resilience, carbon pricing, buildings, energy and waste. Additionally, it will engage with various stakeholders in high level policy dialogues and networking events. The potential impacts of these initiatives and stakeholder collaboration are enormous.
Two days before the Summit, ICLEI will strengthen our commitment to protecting people’s climate by joining the People’s climate march, under the slogan, "Peoples Climate, Mayors Commit". Happening in New York and in multiple cities worldwide, the march is possibly the biggest mobilization for climate action in history.
Through our carbonn Climate Registry, the world´s leading reporting platform for local and sub-national climate action, we will seek to contribute to the transparency, accountability and credibility of climate action of local and subnational governments worldwide.
To effectively tackle climate change, the world needs concerted climate action from all stakeholders, all levels of government and from civil society. ICLEI will continue to engage in local climate action and connect with others to optimize its approach.

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.
ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.
Technical and consulting services, as well as event organization, are provided on a contract basis, in a variety of areas including:
- Surveys, best practices identification and documentation, methodological research, and other studies;
- Development of pilot and demonstration projects;
- Fee-for-service technical consulting in key management areas relevant to local government.
- Organization of conferences, seminars, training courses tailored to the needs of local government experts.
