Pathway: Low emission development

This project has now been concluded.

HSBC, the world’s first carbon neutral bank, launched a climate change programme for India together with four world-class environmental organisations – The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and WWF. Through its partners HSBC will work with research institutions, businesses and individuals to combat the impact of climate change on forests, freshwater, cities and people.

In India, the climate programme involves sustainable water resource management in the Ganges river basin focusing on biodiversity and human livelihoods, sustainable water usage by industry and sustainable energy usage in local cities.

WWF India will be working in the Ganges river basin from Gangotri in the Himalayan foothills to Kanpur in northern India on various aspects of environmental flows of rivers, climate impact on glaciers and preparation for climate change effects in vulnerable communities. ICLEI South Asia will work as a partner to WWF India in their Climate Change Program in India. The two organizations will collaborate to have joint projects to promote and advocate – measures for co-management of water and energy in urban areas; promote sustainable use of natural resources and consumption practices in urban areas; promote and pilot innovative approaches in water resource management, energy use, and municipal waste, develop innovative initiatives; and campaigns such as rating/footprint disclosure of urban local bodies which promote sustainable development and capture the minds of decision makers, investors and key stakeholders as well as work on initiatives of biodiversity conservation, natural resources and promote management systems such as ecoBUDGET in the context of rapid urbanization.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
