CfL Summit report helps cities prepare for COP 12 in Korea

 

Multi-stakeholder coordination, knowledge access and management, green growth, communication, community engagement and partnerships: these are the main issues that emerged from the Cities for Life: Cities and Subnational Biodiversity Summit, that took place in Hyderabad, India, on 15-16 October 2102 in parallel to the CBD COP 11, and that are examined in more detail in the Summit report that has just been released.

 

The Cities for Life Summit report captures the wealth of ideas, tools, resources and messages that came out during the Summit, when more than 500 participants from local and regional governments, UN agencies, academia, business, national and international organisations came together to share their progress on the Plan of Action on Subnational Governments, Cities and Other Local Authorities for Biodiversity and to discuss the next steps needed to meet the Aichi targets. 

 

The report is released as the Korean Ministry of Environment announced the selection of the CBD COP 12 location: ICLEI member Pyeongchang, Gangwondo-Province will host the event from 29 September to 18 October 2014.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
