Communicating biodiversity conservation with schools in Kochi

As part of the INTERACT Bio project, an initiative has been commenced from October 2017, which is aimed at communicating biodiversity conservation with the school children of Kochi. Ten schools in Kochi have been selected for this initiative.

A set of activities (presentation on global biodiversity hotspots and significance of biodiversity, quiz competition, inter-school drawing and bio-craft competitions and development of school biodiversity registers) have been planned for the participating schools. The initiative has received enormous support from the schools. In the first round of activities, presentations and quiz competitions are being organised in all the participating schools.

With the aim of spreading the need for conservation of biodiversity and the role of schools in the same a one day workshop with school teachers in Kochi was organised by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board in Kochi on the 28th of October, 2017.

This workshop was attended by school teachers from 150 schools in Kochi. Dr. SC Joshi, Chairman, Kerala State Biodiversity Board was the Chief Guest and stressed on the need to have active biodiversity clubs in the schools. ICLEI South Asia also participated in the event and addressed the gathering and extended technical support to schools in the development of school biodiversity registers.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
