Connecting the dots’ on non-motorized transportation in India

  

How ready or prepared are Indian city governance structures to implement and promote non-motorized transport? The website Connecting the dots, a project website on non-motorized transportation in Indian cities developed under the Ecomobility Readiness Assessment project supported by the Shakti Foundation aims to answer this question and more.

 

The Ecomobility Readiness Assessment project assessed 28 cities around India to study their readiness or preparedness to implement non-motorized transport initiatives in terms of their policies, capacities, resources and awareness towards ecomobility.

 

The site will feature the assessment results, information about innovative and unique mobility practices in the participant cities, and mobility initiatives around the country.

 

Ecomobility readiness asssessment tool: the cities were assessed using a specialized tool developed under the project covering a range of questions divided into categories of 5 Es: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation. The tool is easy to use, and available online for free.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
