European Bee-Eater Spotted For the First Time in Lahaul-Spiti District

The European Bee-Eater (Merops apiaster) was spotted for the first time in the Lahaul-Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh, on the 21st of June 2019. Ishaan Rashpa, Project Associate, ICLEI South Asia, and Guru Rana, a wildlife enthusiast, spotted the bird in Moshali.

This is the first sighting of the bird in the district. It has been spotted in the state only once before. The sighting and the photographic evidence will help to revise the distribution map of this species.

ICLEI South Asia is conducting bird and mammal surveys in the Lahaul and Pangi landscapes as part of the UNDP-supported SECURE Himalaya project.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
