Indian cities to pilot Integrated Urban Water Management projects

 

Supported by the European Union (Delegation to India), “Adopting Integrated Urban Water Management in Indian Cities” (AdoptIUWM) is being implemented by ICLEI South Asia in 4 cities of Rajasthan and Maharashtra, in partnership with the ICLEI European Secretariat and the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities. The project is supported by the Ministry of Urban Development, GoI. 

 

Project cities will test the implementation of the contextualized and adapted Indian version of the ‘SWITCH – Managing Water for the City of the Future’ toolkit, to be developed under this project.  This toolkit enables cities to integrate often isolated sectors of water supply, sewerage and storm water drainage and adopt IUWM practices in the planning and implementation of 8 pilot projects. Building capacity of municipal officials and other key stakeholders in pilot cities and dissemination of the IUWM tool-kit are key components.

 

The project will be officially launched in May this year.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
