Mayors of Tamil Nadu in Seoul for World Mayors Council

A delegation from the government of Tamil Nadu, the mayor of Thimphu, and the deputy mayor of Matale recently visited Seoul in the Republic of Korea to attend the World Mayors Council on Climate Change, as well as the official inauguration of the ICLEI East Asia Secretariat on 19 October 2012. 

 

Mr. Kinlay Dorjee, mayor of Thimphu, Bhutan spoke in a session that dealt with how to secure a sustainable energy future for East Asia’s cities, and how to enhance global city-to-city cooperation.

 

Mr. V. V. Rajan Chellappa, mayor of Madurai, and Ms. Vijila Sathiyanandh, mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation spoke to participants on climate, energy and citizen engagement.  The mayor and municipal commissioner of Salem; the commissioner of Tirunelveli and the mayor of Thoothukudi attended the dialogue and opening ceremony.

 

The Council concluded with the 2012 Seoul Declaration of Local Governments on

Energy and Climate Mitigation which envisions advancing energy and emissions savings in both municipal operations and at the community level, encourages reporting to Mexico City Pact and carbonn Cities Climate Registry, and foresees a global review in Nantes in 2013.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
