Smart Cities Project Phase II Concludes with Tangible Results
ICLEI South Asia has successfully completed the second phase of the Supporting Sustainable Urban Transport and Built Environment project in four Smart Cities: Udaipur, Ludhiana, Gwalior and Vishakhapatnam. During the entire project duration, the project teams worked very closely with urban local bodies (ULBs), while other parastatal agencies provided technical solutions on mobility aspects within the cities.
As part of the support being given to built environment and mobility initiatives under the Smart Cities Mission, the project team provided technical support on four subsectors: non-motorised transport, public transport, intermediate public transport and parking. The support included assistance in policy formulation, demonstration of pilot initiatives in consultation with the ULBs and traffic police and assistance in promoting electric transport, among others.
The experiences and learnings from all the project cities have been documented in the form of reports and webinars.
The reports include city closure reports that discuss the mobility initiatives in each city under various missions and programmes. These reports capture the various activities carried out by the teams in the project cities, as against the tactics identified at the proposal stage, along with the action plan developed for each city. The closure reports are:
• City Report- Udaipur (Supporting Smart Mobility under Smart City Mission)
• City Report- Vishakhapatnam (Supporting Smart Mobility under Smart City Mission)
• City Report- Ludhiana (Supporting Smart Mobility under Smart City Mission)
• City Report- Gwalior (Supporting Smart Mobility under Smart City Mission)
Based on the experience of the teams in the project cities, ICLEI SA has also developed two handbooks and a learnings report that discuss the on-field observations and recommendations. These are:
• ECBC Compliance in Indian Cities — Handbook
• E-Rickshaw Deployment in Indian Cities — Handbook (Supporting Sustainable Mobility under Smart City Mission)
The project team also organised a series of sector-specific webinars that discussed the learnings from the project. Representatives from municipal corporations and industry, besides consultants and sector experts participated in the webinars. The online recordings and presentations made during the webinars are available here.
