Supporting Swachh Bharat Mission activities in Nellore

In line with the requirements of the Swachh Bharat Mission, ICLEI South Asia is supporting Nellore city in developing a city sanitation plan, leading to the development of a Detailed Project Report for Solid Waste Management. With a population a little over 5 lakhs, the leadership in Nellore is committed to achieving an open defecation free and clean city, ensuring a healthy and happy community.

With past experience in successfully implementing various sanitation related programmes and projects, such as ACCESSanitation – Accelerating City-to-City Exchange for Sustainable Sanitation, SUNYA – Towards Zero Waste in South Asia and developing City Sanitation Plans for Vikarabad (Telangana), Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh), Hosakote (Karnataka) and Vasai Virar (Maharashtra), ICLEI South Asia will now be providing consultancy services for the "City Sanitation Plan for Nellore City" supported by the Nellore Municipal Corporation, Andhra Pradesh.

The plan will focus on elimination of open defecation, eradication of manual scavenging, modern and scientific municipal solid waste management, behavioral change towards healthy sanitation practices, capacity augmentation for the Urban Local Body (ULB) and creating an enabling environment for private sector participation for infrastructure development and operation and maintenance of infrastructure.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide.
