Eleven Indian cities ready to contend for EHCC crown!

 

The eleven Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) Indian contenders are now finally selected: Pune, Panaji, GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation), Bhubaneswar, Shimla, Ahmadabad, Cochin, Nagpur, Coimbatore, New Delhi and Kota confirmed their participation in the 2013 EHCC edition.

 

The Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) is a global initiative by WWF and ICLEI, designed to encourage cities to report their plans for low carbon development and to increase the use of sustainable, renewable and efficient energy options in the future. 

 

ICLEI South Asia has been carrying out Stakeholder Consultation meetings in all the eleven cities, to introduce them to the Challenge and collect information on the cities’ climate change related initiatives, which have been entered in the carbonn Cities Climate Registry. 

 

A panel of judges will now review the entries received from across the globe, especially focusing on sustainable development plans for building, transport, energy and food systems. In the end, the best city from each country will be announced as the Earth Hour National Capital (Delhi being the 2012 Indian winner), and the winner from these will be declared the Earth Hour Capital.

Advocacy

ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability seeks to build an international policy environment that strengthens local government and supports local sustainability. To facilitate this, ICLEI coordinates local government representation in several UN organizations. Our contributions in the form of side events, publications, verbal interventions and official background papers have been a consistent, major source of international attention to local initiatives and opportunities to enhance sustainability.

Training

ICLEI helps strengthen the capacity of local government officials and leaders to drive a process of change towards sustainable development. ICLEI’s Global Capacity Centre (formerly the International Training Centre) organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences, and offers distance training, study tours, and exchange programs. Regular conferences focused on capacity building and exchange take place globally and regionally.

ICLEI South Asia offers local governments a range of services that support training and capacity building on a number of topics such as carbon emission inventorisation, vulnerability assessment, resilience strategy development, integrated water management, holistic waste management, urban mobility and local biodiversity planning. These trainings are sometimes included in programmes and projects, but could also be designed as stand-alone initiatives.
Conferences organized by ICLEI South Asia also provide opportunities for peer exchanges and capacity building, such as the Asia LEDS Partnership Forums and the Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congresses.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, over the last 20 years, has built considerable in-house research capacity drawing on inter-disciplinary teams of experts and practitioners across its offices worldwide. Links and transfers on research and projects have been continuously extended with partners and relevant actors.
